Don’t ignore the symptoms of otitis externa in dogs

The brief

Whether it’s the dog scratching a bit more than usual, or shaking their head more frequently, the symptoms of otitis externa (OE) are hard to detect for pet owners. We were tasked with dialling up the potential severity of these common symptoms and encouraging pet owners to seek advice from their vet.

The idea:

To overcome the challenge of showing severity of symptoms, we used the power of character-based animation to depict what a dog could be going through. Our protagonist ‘Otis’ became a destructive representation of the effects of OE, causing havoc in the dog’s ear, resulting in extreme visual representations of the common symptoms. This creative execution was at the heart of an impactful pet owner campaign that was activated across digital channels such as META, YouTube and Google Display.

The results

A post-campaign survey discovered 90% of dog owners either identified or would identify the signs of OE should they occur, while 80% either visited their vet or would visit their vet should they discover signs of OE.
